The dam will be the largest in the world, stretching nearly a mile across and rising 575 feet above the world's third longest river. Its reservoir will stretch over 350 miles upstream and force the displacement of close to 1.9 million people.

The Three Gorges Dam will incorporate a Power Station, to be the largest of its kind in the world, with a total installed capacity of 18,200 MW, generating 84.7 billion KWH, or one-ninth of the total power generated each year in China.

Construction began in 1994 and is scheduled to last 20 years and cost over USD24 billion.
