Twice a year - for the Ching Ming and Chung Yeung Festivals -
cemeteries are full of life and the air thick with smoke. Between the graves families members busy themselves: they have come together to pay respect to their ancestors.
Ancestors cult is a millennial tradition. It is sometimes considered the only religion to be specifically Chinese.
After graves have been swept clean, they are carefully covered for protection against stains. Delicacies are then laid on the graves: roasting pigs, fish and cakes. To ensure that ancestors do not lack any essentials, jewels, toothpaste and shoes are sent to them - paper models burnt for the occasion. These old rites serve the living and the dead. According to popular belief, spirits have the power to fulfill wishes. To dedicate offerings and consume them together shall be auspicious. As a matter of fact, it strengthens family bounds, communication and the consciousness of common origins. |
